Most people are familiar with the various atrocities committed by early European settlers in the New World against the indigenous peoples living there. Often these sad events were perpetrated by, or at least allowed by, Christians and people representing the church. Bartolomé de Las Casas represents a refreshing departure from this historical trend. De Las Casas was a friar who spent his life fighting the injustices he saw as incompatible with the Christian faith he so ardently preached.
